The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)

“You know, when you grab a woman’s breast…and you feel it, and…it feels like a bag of sand.”

Is it true that if you don’t use it you… lose it? *awkwardly pauses and looks around nervously* I’m merely asking for a friend, he has a lot, and I mean a lot of questions. If it helps, he likes the use of diagrams but, he’s childish and has a boy like wonder, he just laughs at them. Ok, that’s enough references for now but this film is full of them. The 40 Year Old Virgin is one of if not the best comedy ever made, I’d debate that it’s the best honestly. This film is easily one of the most rewatchable comedies in history, regardless how old it becomes. If you’re not crying laughing while watching this, there might be something wrong with you (just kidding, maybe). Every time I watch this movie (I’ve seen it a lot, too many times to count) I can’t help but feel the cringe from Andy and majority of his lines as if I’m watching for the very first time. If someone hasn’t seen this and one of the famous lines get said, I’d bet they would understand the reference, hopefully. The 40 Year Old Virgin has such an astounding cast and I would kill to be a fly on the wall while they made this film, it had to have been one of the best times on a film set.

Everyday Andy wakes up with a pitched tent in his sheets, brushes his teeth (pitched tent), goes to the bathroom which causes a large splash zone (trying to keep it clean if there are any kids reading) and starts another day being a virgin. It’s been 40 years, for some reason. He gets dressed to go to his retail job at Smart Tech, gears up for his bike ride and says good morning to his neighbors. We meet Andy’s wild, out of control and goofy co-works who invite Andy to play poker with them. The group learns of a secret Andy has been keeping to himself and decide who better to help and give sound concrete advice but them. Step one: David, Jay and Cal take Andy out to a bar to get drunk and attempt to pick up a girl. Andy meets Nicky but things do quite go as planned. Andy is uncomfortably awkward around women, he clearly needs guidance and David, Jay and Cal will stop at nothing to help get Andy laid for the first time.

Little does Andy (Steve Carell) know, that the guys he thought were his friends are laughing at him behind his back Andy’s boss Paula (Jane Lynch) goes to Andy with a preposition, which Andy declines. Jay (Romany Malco) personally takes Andy under his wing but, its Cal (Seth Rogan) who really helps Andy the most as the two meet Beth (Elizabeth Banks) and hit it off. Paula recognizes how good of an employee Andy is and promotes him allowing Andy to help his first customer Trish (Catherine Keener). The two get off on the right foot and start to date but, Andy is terrified to share his secret thinking that will drive Trish away because of his inexperience.

During their sex hiatus, Andy gets close to Trish’s daughters Marla (Kat Dennings) and Julia (Chelsea Smith). Andy becomes so close to Marla that he goes with her to a clinic to discuss intercourse and proceeds to ask the questions a teenager would ask. Trish goes to pick up Andy for date night, does a little snooping and finds the porn stash that David (Paul Rudd) gave him. Trish breaks up with Andy, he goes after her and finally tells the secret he has been hiding their whole relationship. The two get married and Andy finally, after 40 years, does the deed; multiple times.

The 40 Year Old Virgin is a film that brings me so much joy and happiness. The situations that are portrayed throughout just make for a hell of a unique comedy. Andy’s coworkers are absolutely out of their minds with the kinds of lives they lead outside of Smart Tech. We see two major cameos from Jonah Hill, who has one of the most awkward interactions with Trish at her eBay store while Andy is asking her out. This cameo from Jonah looks like one of his earliest roles and its sidesplittingly funny. The second cameo comes from Kevin Hart as a Smart Tech customer who nearly gets into a fight with Jay, making it a second awkward interaction Andy gets to witness. Each subplot with Jay and his wife, David and his ex-Amy (Mindy Kaling) and Cal being the wingman of the year just fit the story so perfectly. Each subplot just confirms these guys are completely unstable and are absolutely toxic to Andy’s state of mind.

This movie is completely bat s*** outrageous and I absolutely love it. Steve Carell plays Andy perfectly as this naïve nerd who had the opportunities when he was younger, but it just didn’t happen. The girl with the braces, the girl with the foot fetish and the girl with who he couldn’t undo a bra (all he had to do was ask Dwight Schrute to demonstrate). Even though Andy is a loser, he was still brave enough to go out and put himself out there while accepting help from 3 guys who he should have stayed at least 100 feet away from. You root for Andy with every hill and valley he goes through. The Smart Tech scenes are probably the funniest especially when David has his meltdown and throws a fit about the Michael McDonald DVD always playing. I mean come on, no one wants to hear Michael McDonald all day everyday at work, we’d all go crazy. That’s like hearing Rick Astley for 8 hours a day non-stop, just put me out of my misery, please.

One scene I absolutely love is the first time Andy meets Marla when hes in bed trying to figure out condoms and how to use them. Its hard to picture anyone else as Andy, Steve crushes it. I haven’t even gotten into the single best scene of this film and that ladies and gentlemen is the wax scene. I should say the famous wax scene where our beloved Andy gets his chest waxed where he utters one of the greatest quotable lines ever said. The end result of that waxing is simply perfect. The chemistry everyone has on set with each other is evident as this must have been extremely entertaining to shoot. Let’s not forget the big sing and dance number while the credits roll, its pure entertainment. If I were to rate The 40 Year Old Virgin, id give it a 4.5 out of 5. Its definitely one of my favorite comedies.
